How The Gospel Speaks To Your Enneagram

For those who missed the Enneagram class this month, or anyone who just wants a recap, I thought it would be helpful to write up some of what we talked about.

The Enneagram is both a self-identification tool and a self-transformational tool that gets to the root of why we do what we do. This ancient insight into personality and wiring has been developed over hundreds of years and has an uncanny ability to name not only our behavior, but more notably, our motivations in life. The Enneagram identifies nine personality wirings with more nuance than any other personality typing system I’ve ever encountered.

More importantly than its impressive ability to help us identify core truths about ourselves, is the way the Gospel intersects with what the Enneagram uncovers.

Once we understand our core wiring, our wounds, and the parts of ourselves in the shadows we are more equipped to listen to how God speaks into us specifically. What does He have to say to your specific hurt, to specific lies you believe, fears you have, or protections you have put in place? The more clearly we see our own hearts, our strengths and our weaknesses the more deeply God’s heart can meet us with power and grace.

As a starting point I’ll offer high-level views of each number so you might begin to consider what feels truest to you. But please do use these as only a starting point in your journey. It can take some time to type yourself. Typically there are two or three numbers that you may feel resonate initially and part of the journey is digging into those numbers to find your core motivation.

I will start with number Nine because a hallmark of a nine is feeling unseen and I never like to further that thought by putting them last.

The truths of God can become more specifically powerful for you as you identify with your core wiring. We did an exercise at the end of our class where we considered how God might speak to the heart of each of these numbers. This is the deepest work of transformation: listening to God’s heart and truth for you in the deepest parts of your being.

Here are a few verses to keep in mind.

1s. Colossians 3:3-4

2s. Ephesians 1:4-5
3s. Ephesians 2:8

4s. Psalm 139:14

5s. 2 Peter 1:3

6s. John 14:27

7s. Psalm 16:11 & Psalm 31:24

8s. Hebrews 13:5-6

9s. Psalm 139

What number do you resonate with?  What do you hear the Word speaking as a balm to your soul?
