Why Join a Local Church?

What is a healthy church?

A healthy church has a spiritual, relational, and practical benefit to the members and its immediate community. This kind of church worships Jesus, loves each other as family, and serves together in mission.

First, a Biblical church believes in the Gospel news of Jesus, that he came to save sinners through his perfect life, substitutionary death, and his supernatural resurrection. This truth fuels our worship and brings us to God.

Second, a Biblical church lives out the application of the gospel with its local church community. Jesus said that we will be recognized as Christians by the way we love each other in our church family.

Third, a healthy church has tangible impact locally. The church is God’s redemptive agent in the world to bring wholeness and truth to brokenness and darkness. Jesus promised that God’s church would never be overthrown.

What are the benefits to joining a local church?

1. Joining a local church shapes your character.

"I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." -Romans 12:1-2

Being a part of God’s church goes much deeper than joining a club or connecting with a social group. For God’s people the most critical heart issues revolve around worship. When we identify, commit, and take ownership in God’s church our loves and desires are shaped according to the Bible, and we are shaped and grown into people that reflect the character and beauty of God.

2. Joining a local church advances God’s kingdom.

"For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another." -Romans 12:3-5

Saying you love Jesus, but don’t need the church is like saying you like eating healthy, but only eat fried foods and no vegetables. If you love Jesus, you love what and who He loves. So your experiences, gifts, and talents aren’t just for you, but for the benefit of the whole community. So, when you join a church, you take ownership of one small part of God’s church, and you invest your time and energy into God’s family.
